The Edge crew was running the two dynos like a well-oiled assembly line.
The smoke had barely cleared from Friday night's drag races at Salt Lake City's Rocky Mountain Raceway-the first event of the annual two-day Weekend on the Edge, sponsored by Edge Products-when Saturday morning, truck owners were already lining up at the Edge facilities in Ogden for the Weekend on the Edge Dyno Day. All Edge products are designed, assembled, and tested here, and two of its three dynamometers (a Mustang and a SuperFlow) were open to diesel enthusiasts who wanted to see what their machines could do.
This year there were two classes: Diesel Only, which allows chips, custom injectors, twin turbos, custom exhaust, or any other modification, as long as it burns diesel only; and Open Class, which allows all of the above, plus propane, methanol, nitrous, water injection, and anything else to make more power.
As competitors lined up across the parking lot and out into the street, there was an interesting mix of trucks of all makes and some hybrids. The emblem on the grille was not always a match for the engine inside.

While many were there just to see if their latest tweak was producing more horses, there were some nice incentives from Edge. First Place in each class split a $1,500 purse. Dmitri Millard, already the winner of the Pro Street Diesel Class in the drags, pushed his '01 Chevy to 859.7 hp and 1,176.2 lb-ft of torque. First in the Diesel Only Class was Jared Bristol in an '05 Dodge, with a very impressive 657.2 hp and 1,284.5 lb-ft of torque.

Jordan Hendrix's '98 12-valve Dodge used 370 Marlin injectors and a High Tech Turbo HTB2 to reach 399 hp.
The competition is important, but Dyno Day is also a family event, with a great DJ spinning CDs, delicious barbeque, and some of the most meticulously prepared trucks we've seen anywhere in the country. Ken Jones brought Wild Diesel, his sled pulling '42 Dodge WC53 weapons carrier. The truck's 5.9L Cummins is topped by two huge turbos pumping up to 145 pounds of boost to produce 1,350 hp on regular diesel, and it's street legal. The 50-caliber machine gun was optional.
Zane Koch, owner of Wide Open Performance in Sandy, Utah, was on hand to explain the triple-turbo '06 Dodge his shop had just finished. The 700hp Cummins has 90hp Dynomite injectors and a Smarty programmer.
Jason Hurt's hot Chevy spun...
Jason Hurt's hot Chevy spun the dyno roller up to 608.1 hp and 972.5 lb-ft of torque.
With all these super trucks lining up for the dynos, there was plenty of time for fellow diesel owners to lean over fenders and share information about their modifications. While others were drooling over multiple turbos, exotic intake systems, and gourmet burgers, the Edge crew was running the two dynos like a well-oiled assembly line. As we wandered up and down the lines of contestants waiting for their turn on the dyno, we came across some unique entries.

Fidel Velasquez was happy to show us what his '02 Chevy was built for.
Fidel Velasquez brought his sweet '02 Chevy equipped with an S&B intake, a PPE adjustable lift pump, 5-inch exhaust with a 5-inch stack, and some aggressive MMLMM tuning, all running through a fully built ATS transmission with the ATS Co-Pilot. The truck gave him 448 hp and 902 lb-ft of torque. At the dragstrip the previous night, he turned an impressive 13.1 seconds at 99 mph. He was happy to do a little burnout for us.
Antonio Bonilla climbed right...
Antonio Bonilla climbed right into the engine compartment to show us the changes he made to his '02 Chevy 6.6L Duramax.
Pablo Lucena Lobo, originally from Argentina, was understandably proud of his silver '06 Dodge 2500 Quad Cab 4x4 with a six-speed manual transmission. Working with Toxic Diesel, he was using an AFE Stage 2 intake with a torque tube, an HTB-2 12mm turbo, an ATS exhaust manifold, Arc-Flow intake manifold, a FASS fuel system, and an Edge Juice with Attitude chip (with the Stage 6 download). Out the backside was a Flowmaster Outlaw exhaust system. No one was surprised to see Pablo's best dyno run of 486.9 hp and 959.2 lb-ft of torque. His quarter-mile time of 12.9 seconds at 99 mph was equally impressive. He plans to install 90hp injectors from Dynomite and some ARP head studs. We guess we'll see him next year.
Sixteen-year-old Spencer Frost...
Sixteen-year-old Spencer Frost added 75hp injectors and water-methanol to reach 292 hp in his low-budget '94 Dodge.
Terry Hansen's '78 Ford crew cab caught our eye when he popped the hood and we saw that immaculate 12-valve Cummins. Terry told us he built the truck in his barn with spare parts, in between milking cows. The biggest problem was adapting the engine to the five-speed NV-4500. An advanced adapter solved that hitch. He ported the exhaust side and bolted on a turbo and intercooler off an '06 common-rail Dodge. Terry made most of the little adapters himself. A low-pressure lift pump and some Moonlight Diesel injectors move the fuel along. On the dyno he reached 314.5 hp and 717.8 lb-ft of torque. His two sons thought it was all pretty cool. Seems like the cows did, too.
An AFE on the intake side...
An AFE on the intake side and MagnaFlow performance exhaust at the back highlight Antonia Bonilla's '02 Chevy 6.6L Duramax, which produced 431.8 hp and 760 lb-ft of torque.
Antonio Bonilla climbed right into the engine compartment to show us the changes he made to his '02 Chevy 6.6L Duramax. An AFE on the intake side and MagnaFlow performance exhaust at the other end gave this engine some good flow. A FASS ISO fuel pump and some programming by Mike Mayer at EFILive put it all together. His dyno run produced 431.8 hp and 760 lb-ft of torque.

Don't think for a second that this is just a grown-up guy's thing. Lindsey Yates, a.k.a. Sled Girl, took her '04 Dodge Ram up to 370 hp and 851 lb-ft of torque. Kids can play, too. A young (16), but talented Spencer Frost bought his well-used '94 Dodge for about $2,200 so he could drive to school. He added a 4-inch turbo, 75hp injectors, water-methanol, and tweaked the pump a little. Spencer told us it could do 0 to 60 in 7.5 seconds. On his dyno test, 292 hp and 780 lb-ft of torque showed he had done his homework. We did notice the steel cords showing through on his tires. That's his next purchase.
