The Incubus Grim wheels wrapped in General Grabber UHVs fit nicely and don't rub thanks to the two different sizes (305/50-R20s in back, 295/50-R20s in front).
Looking under the truck, we couldn't help but notice the MagnaFlow stainless 4-inch turbo-back exhaust system. This led us to pop the hood and check out the power behind this impressive ride. With the hood up, we couldn't help but notice the RedTop Optima batteries. These provide the cold cranking amps in the morning to help turn the factory 7.3L engine over. When the engine starts cranking, the air is sucked through the AFE Stage II intake with a Pro Guard 7 filter and pre-filter. Once the air is in the intake system, it is immediately compressed by the Garrett GTP38R ball bearing turbocharger. From there, it is sent through the Banks intercooler tubing and into a factory 6.0L Power Stroke intercooler, and then into the engine.
With the air being forced into the combustion chamber, the fuel is sucked up through the modified pickup tube in the fuel tank and through the Diesel Innovations regulated return system and into the stock AD injectors. The Stealth dual high-pressure oil pumps (HPOP), set to 3,200 psi, generate the oil pressure required to fire the injectors. As the pistons come up, the injectors fire as per the custom live tuning done by Tony Wildman at Total Diesel Performance to ignite and get the engine up and running. This combination recently made 360.4 hp and 718.9 lb-ft while being virtually smoke-free.
It is the attention to detail...
It is the attention to detail that makes this truck so clean and unique. Even the dash and door panels were upgraded with wood accents.
At wide-open throttle, the Garrett turbocharger puts out 31 pounds of boost, which is more than the factory computer can handle. So Whatley installed an air pressure regulator inline to the manifold air pressure (MAP) sensor to fool it into thinking the charger is only putting out 21 pounds of boost. This was confirmed during the live tuning.
Handling the power from the engine is not an easy job. So Whatley modified his factory valvebody by installing a Sonnax/Tricumulator. This combination has held the power without any issues and sends it back to the rear end with a factory 3.73 gear ratio with a factory limited-slip locker. Keeping everything running cool and lubricated isn't always an easy task, so Whatley uses Royal Purple's synthetic lubricants and opted for an '08 finned aluminum rear differential cover to help remove the extra heat.
Once the truck starts to move, it is important to make sure it can be stopped. So Hawk brake pads were installed in the front and rear, and DJM Calshocks were installed up front to help keep the weight where it needs to be during braking.
The truck was originally equipped...
The truck was originally equipped with a cloth interior and Whatley wanted something nice and unique-so in went saddle leather with ostrich inserts.
In the cab, seatbelts hold the passengers against the saddle leather seats with ostrich inserts installed by Eddie Wheelhouse at Detroit Customs. The occupants are entertained by the Kenwood DDX514 double DIN head unit, which plays through the Polk Audio 5x7-inch door speakers. The driver can monitor what's going on under the hood thanks to the Isspro Performax pyrometer, boost, high-pressure oil pump, fuel pressure, transmission temperature, water temp, and oil pressure gauges mounted on the A-pillar and in the dash next to the burl wood Autometer inserts.
In addition to knowing what is going on under the hood, Whatley installed a CB to monitor and communicate with truckers on a long haul. It is always good to know where the trouble spots are and if there are any accidents along the road.
Though this is a truck with more than 100,000 miles on the odometer, it is probably as close as we can get to a perfect example of a flawless truck. Whatley has truly done an impressive job of paying attention to every little detail.
