I live in Northern Idaho, and am going to go the college up here, so I need a good snow truck. Are there any issues that I should know about before getting one of these trucks? Do you know of any that are for sale? I have heard that sometimes the injectors can be a problem on these trucks? Is this true? I do not plan on driving it hard, my house is an hour and a half away from the college, so just driving home on holidays and driving in town, there is a possibility however of a few trips to California in it? How reliable are these trucks? Thanks, Chris

Early 2000's Chevy 2500HD |

The average pickup truck today is often required to perform a variety of multi-tasking duties, ranging from basic transportation to rigorous towing, yet is somewhat inflexible as far as torque, horsepower and fuel economy are concerned. This puts many weekend warriors who haul or trail loads such as RVs, boats and horse trailers in a quandary: Do they opt for a pickup with heavy-duty power and suffer the added purchase and operating cost consequences . . . or simply accept the performance and mileage limitations of their 300 HP-range pickup when under load and/or climbing long grades? Many of today’s pickup owners are opting for a viable, variable solution, the use of programmable tuners to monitor and control basic engine performance in terms of torque and horsepower, fuel economy and some engine safety parameters – without modification to engine hardware. (This is essentially the same basic mechanism that is used by many operators of heavy-duty trucks to achieve the same benefits.) Engine performance tuners, known more generally as programmable “gauge/tuners,” are electronic devices used to manage engine performance. Consisting of a compact, dash- or windshield-mounted control panel with wire leads, gauge/tuners are connected to the engine’s control module to regulate and monitor performance parameters according to vehicle load requirements and the operator’s desires. Using a gauge/tuner it is possible to increase typical diesel or gasoline engine horsepower up to 25 percent, or to boost fuel economy significantly. Generally speaking, a variety of horsepower settings (e.g. Stock, Tow and Performance) are available to accommodate various driving conditions. The selected setting is controlled and monitored by the gauge/tuner, offering the vehicle operator not only more power or economies, but also improved vehicle control via heads-up display of critical engine performance factors (e.g. water temp, oil temp, boost pressure). With some of the more sophisticated gauge/tuners, both horsepower and fuel mileage can be optimized simultaneously. “I have always liked horsepower, so I have been using Bully Dog gauge/tuners on my last two pickups (a 2011 Ford Raptor 6.2L and 2006 Duramax 6.6L turbo diesel),” says Kevin Johns of Hymark Farms, Aberdeen, ID. “Both are used for hauling and trailing a 5th wheel RV and a big snow mobile trailer. I love the enhanced performance, the added torque and horsepower,” he says. “Also, both vehicles tow better, shift better, and run a little cooler under load. What is surprising is that no matter how high the horsepower setting, using the gauge/tuner I have always got a little better fuel mileage, too, as much as 8 to 8-1/2 percent more even climbing grades with heavy loads.” More advanced systems Using the most advanced gauge/tuners, users of vehicles powered by gasoline or light-duty diesel engines can get even more enhanced operational features and benefits. For example, Bully Dog’s Triple Dog GT offers advanced programming and monitoring capabilities, including the ability to easily change settings, even on-the-fly while driving diesel vehicles. This system is the equivalent of four products in one: a vehicle engine tuner, function monitor, performance gauge and diagnostic device, all in a single unit. In addition to significant horsepower and fuel economy gains, the GT provides a set of monitoring features and diagnostic functions for enhanced driving and safety. For example, if someone is running in high horsepower mode, and engine coolant or lube oil temperatures begin to overheat, the GT gauge/tuner will automatically recognize the condition and begin to lower the horsepower until the situation is corrected. The gauge/tuner will also alert the driver with a message on the panel display that notifies the driver what is happening and why (e.g. Engine overheating, horsepower lowering). Chris Russmann, president of performance parts distributor Cyclone Diesel Performance (Farmersville, TX), says that advanced, programmable gauge/tuners such as the GT monitor for four different engine operating levels simultaneously. “This protects the truck and driver,” Russmann says. “For example, let’s say you forgot to put it in “tow” mode and hooked onto your travel trailer. The gauge/tuner will automatically monitor engine operating conditions such as overheating or excessive boost (in the case of a turbocharged engine), and automatically shift to the “tow” performance level. This not only protects the engine, but also ensures that the vehicle will operate efficiently and provides a more enjoyable trip.” Russmann adds that although gauge tuners such as Bully Dog perform comprehensive performance tests on their units, such as dyno and fuel consumption testing, part of the beauty of using these electronic devices is that each driver is able to control his own performance parameters according to load and desired operating conditions. What to look for When selecting a gauge/tuner, there are several criteria to consider. These include ease of installation, availability of a model that matches your vehicle’s engine, automated monitoring and control features (e.g. that provide maximum vehicle control, and the capability to “dial-in” performance adjustments such as horsepower output on-the-fly). Bully Dog gauge/tuners, for example, are installed quickly and easily by attaching leads from the control panel to the engine’s control module. Then vehicle-specific (Dodge/Cummins, GM or Ford in the case of these models) software is downloaded to a laptop or tablet computer via the Internet, and transferred to the gauge/tuner via a standard cable. The gauge/tuner monitor prompts the installer through the procedure, ensuring that software installation goes smoothly. After that, the user simply dials in the operating parameters that are required whenever desired. Monitoring capabilities may be important to many vehicle operators, such as those with commercial applications or who frequently tow heavy loads. To ensure reliable, optimized performance, the more powerful gauge/tuners will monitor turbo boost pressure, engine RPM, transmission temperature, air flow, fuel rail pressure and other operating parameters. Another key thing to look for is location of the gauge/tuner. Some models locate the control panel under the hood in the engine compartment. This exposes it to heat, cold, humidity and vibration, which can potentially cause a malfunction or even failure. On the other hand, cab-mounted control panels are protected from those stresses and can be easily accessed for on-the-fly changes. To ensure that performance and fuel economy are maximized, Bully Dog has a tool called Driving Coach available on some gauge/tuner models. Driving Coach is an on-screen feedback system that gives drivers specific tips on how to improve their driving habits in conjunction with their gauge/tuner capabilities to enhance fuel conservation while getting more efficient performance. This feature may prove highly valuable to commercial drivers with changing loads as well as those who use their pickups to tow an RV on weekends. http://www.bullydog.com http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c364/mlthomps/Gauge-TuneronWindshieldwithcaption.jpg http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c364/mlthomps/Gauge-TunerInstalledwithcaption.jpg

Bully Dog Triple Dog GT Gasoline Gauge/Tuner |

But V-Band clamps, which seal off hot exhaust so the turbocharger can force compressed air into the intake, have presented a challenge when traditional fastening nuts loosen in the extreme heat and vibration turbocharger environment. Now a unique internal thread form is helping the truck and auto industry withstand extreme turbocharger heat and vibration, while reducing cost, assembly, and warranty issues. Preventing Exhaust Leaks With exhaust temperatures reaching up to 1,300 °F, the V-Band Clamp assembly could quickly be compromised if exhaust leaks. With component temperatures reaching up to 1,000 °F around the turbocharger, nut locking features using adhesive or nylon rings would burn up. Vibrational fastener loosening, already a challenge in well-supported engine blocks, can be a greater challenge in turbochargers, which typically hang off the side of the engine, with less structural support and, consequently, more vibration. Since V-Clamp nuts must run down the length of the long T-bolt stud, which can be 6-8 times the body diameter of the nut, prevailing torque type locking features can gall and wear out before the nut is properly seated. If this happens on the assembly line, each incident can cost up to $2,000 to stop the line, remove the engine, and remanufacture the V-Band Clamp assembly. For this reason, plain metal V-Clamp nuts are typically used-but as soon as they lose tension they can start to back off, which can raise performance and warranty issues. To keep turbochargers sealed and prevent exhaust leaks, truck and auto engineers are turning to a novel V-Band Clamp Nut called Spiralock, developed by Spiralock Corp., a company that specializes in innovative fasteners. Its unique internal thread form is helping the truck and auto industry withstand extreme turbocharger heat and vibration, while reducing cost, assembly, and warranty issues. This re-engineered thread form adds a unique 30-degree wedge ramp at the root of the thread which mates with standard 60-degree male thread fasteners. The wedge ramp allows the bolt to spin freely relative to female threads until clamp load is applied. The crests of the standard male thread form are then drawn tightly against the wedge ramp, eliminating radial clearances and creating a continuous spiral line contact along the entire length of the thread engagement. This continuous line contact spreads the clamp force more evenly over all engaged threads, improving resistance to vibrational loosening, axial-torsional loading, joint fatigue, and temperature extremes. When a major heavy truck turbo manufacturer was breaking T-bolts driving a clincher nut that galled on a V-Band Clamp assembly previously, they had to take the turbo off the production line to repair. Switching to the free-spinning Spiralock V-Band Clamp saved them the loss of about 15 V-Band Clamp assemblies per day at the plant, eliminating related production downtime and remanufacturing cost. With higher heat in gasoline engines than in diesel engines, the U.S. auto fleet may benefit the most from Spiralock V-Band Clamp Nut. It's already being used on one of the first applications of dual turbo engines in light trucks. As vehicles from light trucks to SUVs and crossovers look to produce V8 power in a V6 engine with turbo, the innovative V-Band Clamp Nut may be just what engineers need to keep turbochargers sealed and prevent exhaust leaks. The Spiralock locking fastener has been validated in published test studies at leading institutions including MIT, the Goddard Space Flight Center, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and British Aerospace. Some of its automotive applications include Cummins, Mack Trucks, and Shanghai Diesel Engine. It has also been used in extreme fastening applications with virtually no chance of recall: from the main engines of NASA's Space Shuttle; to the Saturn Cassini orbiter and Titan Huygens probe; to medical implants, artificial limbs, and heart pumps. 31 May 2012 18:05:49 -0700

Electrical

GM electric fuel pump circuit testing issues
i have found that an important test for GM electric fuel pumps has been skipped somehow.. engine idling... pull the fuel pump relay or remove the wiring connector from it.... the engine SHOULD continue to idle.. and run as normal. if the engine dies.. change the oil pressure switch.. look at this first diagram.. just the upper half.. http://i1207.photobucket.com/albums/bb476/waynep712/fuelpumprelaywiring747ecm4.jpg see the orange wire.. that sends power to the fuel pump relay.. but also to the fuel pump control terminals on the oil pressure switch.. see those below.. the OIL pressure switch should be handing most of the current for the fuel pump circuit.. not the tiny pins of the relay.. this redundant circuit is to make sure that you get where you are going without stalling out.. can you see the bent lead in this image.. that is for the oil pressure switch. for the gauge circuit. its the BAR and the outer 2 contacts in the cap that we are worried about.. http://i1207.photobucket.com/albums/bb476/waynep712/gmoilpressurefuelpumpswitch3.jpg http://i1207.photobucket.com/albums/bb476/waynep712/gmoilpressureswitchfuelpumpswitch1.jpg when the oil pressure comes up slightly. probably 6 or 7 psi.. the BAR is pushed against the terminals inside the socket.. creating a complete circuit to power the fuel pump.. the problem is.. its NOT a wiping contact.. the spots where it touches are the same each time.. so it can build up corrosion and oxides to prevent proper contact.. when this happens... all the current for the fuel pump supply circuit will be sent through the fuel pump relay... this is what a lot of gm cars and trucks use for a fuel pump relay.. some have larger terminals.. some a micro sized case.. theory is the same.. http://i1207.photobucket.com/albums/bb476/waynep712/fuelpumprelayinsides.jpg the contacts get dirty.. when the oil pressure switch fails.. all the fuel pump current is sent through this side of the harness.. look at the size of the pins.. they are tiny. the connectors in the socket get loose from thermal cycling.. then you burn up relays.. leaving you stranded sometimes. or odd stalling issues.. where the engine will just quit.. and then restart.. in the diagram above.. you will see the dark green and white striped wire to the coil windings of the fuel pump relay.. the computer on most GMs.. sends positive voltage to the fuel pump relay coils to activate the relay.. which is reversed from almost everything else controlled by the computer.. please be VERY careful in diagnosing the green and white striped wire.. if your test light pulls more than one amp... you can burn the power transistor out inside the computer.. creating an unseen problem that will drive you crazy.. you will also see that one of the wires runs to the ALDL connector.. thats the fuel pump prime circuit.. i don't know if all the GM cars with ALDL connectors and electric fuel pumps are equipped with that.. most of the tuned port injected cars are with OBD1 connectors.. there is another source of power for the fuel pump.. thats really not well known.. its shown on the diagram close to the bottom of the upper section.. thats the HOT fuel module.. that is mounted under the hood someplace.. it keeps the fuel pump running when the engine is shut off and fairly hot.. to cool the injectors from heat soak from the engine.. also stops the fuel from boiling in the fuel lines from the heat when shut off.. its hard to tell which cars are equipped with it.. this diagram is for the 7747 ECM used on a lot of gm port fuel injected cars.. and a lot of PFI and TPI swaps.. i hope that this tidbit of info and 5 minutes of reading time save you some headaches by finding an invisible issue before it happens... one thing.. if you look at the threads of the oil pressure switch above.. they are WRONG... who ever rolled those threads rolled them to 1/2-13 UNC... not 1/4-18 NPTm it's close.. it will thread in.. but it will also send off big turnings of steel when installing it into the STEEL adaptors that GM has on their engines.. so feel the threads on any oil pressure switch you buy.. if they are NOT smaller in diameter slightly at the first and larger at the top of the threads.. don't buy it.. i know there might be an application for the 1/2-13 straight thread.. but somebody screwed up with this one.. http://i1207.photobucket.com/albums/bb476/waynep712/gmoilpressurefuelpumpswitch2.jpg when also having fuel pump related issues.. one will also want to check the ground connections usually found on top of a frame rail crossmember under the bed of the truck... http://i1207.photobucket.com/albums/bb476/waynep712/Chevypickupfuelpumpgroundframe.jpg http://i1207.photobucket.com/albums/bb476/waynep712/94GMC_C1500fuelpumpground.jpg if these are dirty or corroded.. you won't get as much current from the ground side of the circuit and you won't have enough electrons to make the pump spin at full speed... don't forget to check the grounds at the front of the frame to the negative battery. could be under the cab front or near the front of the engine... the oil pressure switch on the LS motors is hidden behind the intake in the same general position as any of the earlier generations of gm motors..
